RM150,000 presented to 10 charitable bodies

Kota Kinabalu: A total of RM150,000 was presented to ten charitable bodies by the organiser of this year's Unicef Borneo Marathon witnessed by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Frankie Poon at the Ministry on Thursday.

Datuk Dr Heng Aik Cheng, President of Kinabalu Running Club and Race Director of the event who gave away the mock cheques with each amounting to RM15,000 to the recipients also presented one to Frankie for a charitable body of the Ministry's choice.

The ten bodies who received their benefits were Kinabalu Pink Ribbon, Sabah Cheshire Home, Befrienders, Sabah Special Olympics, Pemadam, Palliative Care Association, Sri Mengasih Centre, Operation Smile Sabah, Persatuan Penderma Darah Negeri Sabah and Edulife.


At the same time, Heng also announced the official launch of the Unicef Borneo Marathon next year on April 29, with the hashtag #Nutricent.

He said it is important to make the public aware of the danger of obesity as Malaysia have the largest number of overweight people in South East Asia.

Meanwhile, Marianne Clark-Hattingh, Unicef representative to Malaysia in a statement issued said they are privileged to partner Kinabalu Running Club for the Unicef Borneo Marathon 2019.

"Since the start of the partnership in 2017, Unicef Borneo Marathon has promoted different causes to build a more inclusive and safe environment for children. First, we ran for the inclusion of children with disabilities with the hashtag #Thisability.


The next year, we ran for kindness to combat bullying with the hashtag #StandTogether. In 2019, we want to promote healthy eating habits among children and youths.

"Children and youths need to know how they can make crucial changes to their eating habits to live healthier lives.

Be a part of the Unicef Borneo Marathon 2019 to support the next generation eat healthier and live better for the sustainable development of the country," she said. - GL Oh
