Kota Kinabalu: Forty-six teams are taking part in the 2nd Sabah Pairs Open Lawn Bowls Championship organised by Sabah Lawn Bowls Association (SLBA) which began at the Likas Lawn Bowls Stadium on Thursday.

The number of participating teams has increased from last year's 37 teams and the prize money has also improved with the Cup winners getting RM3,000 and a trophy sponsored by Ararat Sports.

The runners-up will get RM2,000 with third and fourth place winners each receiving RM1,000 while fifth to eight places will each get RM500.

In the Plate category, RM500 will be given to the champions with RM400 going to the runners-up and joint third place will each receive RM300.

Brunei is the biggest foreign entry with seven teams, Peninsula with four, five from Labuan and one from Sarawak while the rest are locals.

Youth and Sports Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Awang Damit Ag Anak was at the opening ceremony representing the Minister Datuk Frankie Poon.

Also present were Sabah Sports Board Chairman Datuk Louis Rampas and MSN Director Terrance Pudin and SLBA President Datuk Ladislaus Maluda.

Meanwhile, Ladislaus urged the Ministry to build a roof over the green so that the tournaments can be staged and players can train regardless of adverse weather condition, and at the same time would provide protection, where at present some parts of the green are damaged. - GL Oh
