Eight years for gang robbery against woman

Kota Kinabalu: A 22-year-old local was jailed eight years' for committing armed gang robbery against a woman.

Sukri Awang admitted before Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz to robbing Norfazrinah Majil, 22, of her handphone and RM500.

He committed the offence together with another accused Sahnizam Nair, 18, whose sentencing was deferred to July 22 pending his social report.

During the incident at 5.40pm on June 3 this year at the Kedai Runcit Sudi Sepakat Enterprise in Kg Gusi Taun Peninting, Kota Belud, Sukri together his co-accused had used a knife.

The offence under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction.

In mitigation, Sukri who was not represented, asked for a light sentence.

But Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali urged the court to hand down a heavy sentence.

The court heard that while Norfazrinah was at the shop, two unknown men entered the shop and threatened her with a knife which resulted in her surrendering her handphone and money.

Following the police report lodged by Norfazrinah, both were arrested.

The court ordered Sukri to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest. - Cynthia D Baga
