Kota Kinabalu: Forty-nine swimmers from Sabah will participate in the 54th Malaysia National Age Group Swimming Championships (MIAG) at National Aquatic Centre, Bukit Jalil from March 15-18.

The contingent consists of athletes mostly from Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan with four others from Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Perth where they are currently based.

Sabah Aquatic Sports Associations (Sasa) President, Anthony Kiob is pleased with the significant increased number of athletes as compared to only twenty-eight last year.

"Thirty-two of our athletes are actually below the age of 13 and they will be taking part in the bottom two categories. There are five categories in the Championship: Open (above 17 years), Group I (15-17 years), Group II (13-14 years), Group III (11-12 years) and Group IV (10 years and below)."

Sabah won four golds, eleven silvers and nine bronzes last year and Kiob hoped the swimmers will give their very best and shine in this year's meet.

The squad led by team manager Sanctuson Gan with head coach Benjamin Lee, assistant coach Tie Mee Kiong as well as Daniel Lee, who will be joining the technical team to officiate the championship, will leave for the competition on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Anthony also expressed his gratitude to Life Water Industries Sdn Bhd, for contributing some of the team's T-shirts as well as sponsoring the 51st Sabah Invitational Age Group Swimming Championship, and upcoming Novice Competition in May.

The other sponsors of the team's T-shirts are swimshop2u managed by Metrotech Technologies, and Penamapang District Swimming Associaiton.

He also thank Sabah Sports Council (MSN) for the continuous support and the financial and management assistance given for the Sabah aquatic sports. – GL Oh
